Toronto's Anglican cathedral is located at the northeast corner of King and Church Streets.
The site of the present cathedral was the location of the Town of York's first church, built between 1803 and 1807. In 1834 the Town of York became the City of Toronto and in 1839 St. James' church was designated Toronto's first cathedral. The cathedral was destroyed in the great fire of 1849, but rebuilding began in 1850 and was completed in 1874.
Today's St. James' Cathedral is the largest in Toronto and the height of its spire is second, in North America, to that of St. Patrick's in New York City. A breathtaking historic structure, it is located adjacent to St. James' Park, which is particularly spectacular in the summer months and features a Victorian garden complete with a water fountain.
